Detectorlist has published metal detecting survey results from a commission with Populus to gain insight into the UK public view of metal detecting as a hobby.

Detectorlist, a website dedicated to the metal detecting hobby, recently commissioned a professional survey from Populus to gain more insight into the public perception of metal detecting as a hobby. The survey was an online nationally representative poll with 2,071 respondents.
Detectorlist discovered that 43% of respondents would either definitely consider or may consider metal detecting as a hobby. It was generally male-favoured with 47% as opposed to females at just 40%. Middle-aged respondents between the ages of 45 to 54 were most likely to consider it as a hobby with 54% agreeing. However, only 1% stated that they already do metal detecting as a hobby.
Around 59% of respondents felt that their children would enjoy metal detecting. Surprisingly, female respondents agreed to this more (66%) than males (52%). There were no observable differences in age, region or social grade that could affect opinions on metal detecting. The survey also discovered that respondents felt metal detecting could be interesting and exciting, but a few respondents also related it to words such as “boring”.
The survey results suggest that metal detecting is more popular and recognised than Detectorlist initially thought, but only a small percentage of respondents are currently engaged in metal detecting. This shows that while it is popular, metal detecting may need a lower barrier of entry and more awareness for it to become a more popular hobby choice.
