Beacon Design Collective Founder Dani Vachon Sets Out Why Children's Educational Materials Require a Different Design Standard Than Any Other Category of Nonprofit Communication

Nov 5, 2026

As the studio behind the VEGA Award Gold-winning children's book Being Métis Makes Me Happy, Dani Vachon sets out what designing for children in a culturally specific context actually requires and why the standards that govern adult-facing nonprofit communications are insufficient for this work.

-- Dani Vachon, founder and CEO of The Beacon Design Collective Inc., an award-winning, carbon-negative creative studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has set out her perspective on the design of children's educational materials for nonprofit and government clients, drawing on Beacon's documented experience producing the VEGA Award Gold-winning children's book Being Métis Makes Me Happy in partnership with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

Vachon's position is that children's educational materials, particularly those designed for culturally specific communities, require a design standard that is fundamentally different from the standard applied to adult-facing nonprofit communications. The difference is not simply one of reading level or visual complexity. It is a difference in the relationship between the material and the child's sense of identity, belonging, and self-recognition.

"A child who sees themselves in a book is having a different experience from a child who is learning about someone else," Vachon says. "Educational materials for children in Indigenous communities are not just communication tools. They are mirrors. The design has to reflect back something true."

What Being Métis Makes Me Happy Required

The production of Being Métis Makes Me Happy involved sustained collaboration with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Children and Family Services throughout the project. Every visual decision, from the cut-out paper illustration style chosen to resonate with traditional Métis handcrafts including beadwork and hand weaving, to the incorporation of the woven sash and other cultural symbols, was developed in direct consultation with the community rather than interpreted from the outside.

The project was led by Art Director Dani Vachon with illustration by Carlie Russelle, senior design by Anile Prakash, and lead design by Jazmin Rodriguez. The VEGA Award Gold recognition it received reflects not only the quality of the creative execution but the depth of the cultural collaboration that made accurate and meaningful representation possible.

Vachon's principle for this category of work is direct. You cannot design for cultural understanding without first achieving it yourself. And achieving it requires listening, sustained collaboration, and the discipline to hold back creative decisions until the community you are designing for has had the opportunity to shape them.
